OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and Parallels issues

If you use OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and you have Parallels desktop installed, you may run into an issue where some files attempt to open in Parallels. This lesson explains how to fix this issue.

Checking your OSX version

To check which version of OSX you are running go to the Finder Apple menu -> About this Mac

If you are running 10.6 or later you are running Snow Leopard.

Checking your OceanBrowser version

Launch OceanBrowser, the latest version (at time of writing) for OSX is version 2.4. This will be displayed in the main window title bar. If you do not see OceanBrowser 2.4 there, please update the software. The 2.4 installer is available for download here.

The Parallels file type issue explained...

Parallels is an application which allows you to run (typically) Windows operating systems on a Mac computer at the same time as OSX. It will modify the OSX settings so that certain types of files are opened by default in Windows.

Try and open a resource in OceanBrowser which ends in ".web", as illustrated above.

If Parallels attempts to open you will see a dialog similar to (1), and icons in your Dock similar to (2). This indicates that some files are set to open in Windows. Let's fix that.

Locating the temporary files

Leaving OceanBrowser software running, switch to the Finder, navigate to your home folder, then the Library folder (1), Application Support (2), OceanBrowser (3), tempfiles (4) and click on whatever lesson resource you were viewing (5). Inside this folder you will find several files, let's look at them in detail...

Notice that the ".swf" file in this example (1) has an icon with two vertical bars in it? This indicates the file will be opened in Parallels. We don't want this, let's change it.

Click on the file and select "Get Info" from the File menu.

Changing the default application for a file type

Media_1266551965329

Go to the section "Open with" and click on the drop down menu....

Select "Safari" as the default item. It may not appear in the same position in the menu. If you cannot see Safari listed, click on Other (2) and navigate to the Applications folder and select the Safari application.

The Get Info window should now show Open with "Safari" (1) as illustrated. Click the "Change All" button to set this as the default for all similar files.

Completion

Go to OceanBrowser and try opening the presentations now - they should open without launching Parallels.

This is a rare and unusual issue to occur, so if these instructions don't resolve the problem for you, please contact support and we will assist you personally.
