Describes how to connect to an OceanBrowser webinar.

Understanding the difference between an audio conference and a webinar

OceanBrowser supports two types of conference events: audio conferences and Big Blue Button ("BBB") webinars.

BBB has it's own Flash-based web phone to connect to the audio conference (see below: "Connecting to audio conference via BBB Flash webphone") which will be the normal way you will connect to the audio conference part of the webinar.

If you only have a phone (no internet connection) or are having problems connecting to BBB, you may still access the audio portion of the webinar via an ordinary phone (see this link for further information).

 

Getting started

To connect to the Big Blue Button webinar system go to http://oceanbrowser.com/webinar

(If you are an Aviation or Occupational Medicine student, please follow the link within your course in the Medicine at Otago website to join your conferences as these are each held in their own special room.)

Enter your name in the field (1) and click Join (2) to join the conference.

You can View Tutorial videos (3) if you want to become familiar with the operation of Big Blue Button conferencing.

After a few moments the conference window will appear. Participants in the webinar will appear under "Users" (1). If the presenter has loaded any visual materials into the conference (such as a web page or PDF) these will appear at (2). You may view or participate in text chat at (3). Enter your message and click "Send". You may logout at (4)

Connecting to audio conference via BBB Flash webphone

At the top right of the screen two icons will provide you with the option to (1) share your webcam, and (2) join the audio conference.

You may participate in the conference either via Voip or phone. If you want to use the phone, see this lesson.

Accessing the Flash settings

To open the Flash settings, using the RIGHT mouse button, click in the BBB conference window. Mac users without a 2nd button mouse, hold down the control key and click. Select Settings.

The audio conference usese Flash (on Mac/PC) to connect you with the conference. You may be prompted to adjust your Flash security settings. Adjust the Privacy settings to allow the BBB website to connect to your camera and mic (1). These can be found in the 2nd tab in the Flash Player settings.

Adjust your Microphone settings to suit - these can be found in the 4th tab of the Flash Player settings.

Select the Microphone you want to use, then adjust the Record Volume until your voice appears in the level area (3) without clipping or distorting.

Remember - you may need to change the Microphone from Built-in to use your USB headset.

Here we can see the settings with the USB mic chosen, level adjusted, and sound appearing in the level area. Click Close to confirm these settings.
