Installing and getting started with Dropbox
Dropbox is an application for sharing files between one or people. You can use it to (for example) sync files between your office computer and home computer (or laptop). You could also use it to sync a folder between several colleagues collaborating on the same project.
We are going to use Dropbox to share a folder on your computer with OceanBrowser support.
First let's install Dropbox...
- Once the file has downloaded you will find it in your downloads folder, or in the downloads window in your browser (1). Double click on it.
- Install Dropbox by dragging it to your Applications folder (2)
- Start the Dropbox application by double clicking on Dropbox in your Applications folder (3)
For more information see the Dropbox support pages, especially the Getting Started FAQ
The first time you run Dropbox you will be prompted to setup a new account. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the account setup process.
To open your Dropbox folder, go to the Finder, click on your home folder (1), then double click on the Dropbox folder (2).
In your Dropbox folder, create a new folder and name it <your name>-oceanbrowser. When you share this folder with us this will assist us to be able to organise the content.
Using the Right Mouse button on your mouse (or hold down the Control key on your keyboard) click on the folder and select Dropbox -> Share this folder.
Your web browser will open and go to your account (1) on the Dropbox website. Enter our address: support@oceanbrowser.com in the sharing area (2) then click Share Folder (3) to begin sharing.
Now anything you add the this folder on your computer will be sent automatically to us. That's all!
In other situations, you may receive an invitation to a shared folder on Dropbox from one of your colleagues (or from OceanBrowser if you are collaborating with us). This will arrive in your email and should include a note from your colleague (1) and a link to view the shared folder (2)
